I once knew a senior executive that everyone was terrified of.
Her reputation preceded her in the office.
I am sure many of you have worked with such a person.
However, one day she became MY manager, and I was quite fearful of what I was getting into.
But what I got was one of the most fiercely supportive bosses I've ever had.
She trusted my ability to complete my responsibility and would defend and uplift me, no questions asked.
I can't describe how affirming and inspiring it is to have that kind of trust and support in the workplace, but I do remember feeling deeply empowered knowing she had my back.
It changed the way I approached leadership and the way I coach leaders to support their teams.
An empowered and trusted team can achieve anything
And it's not to say you can't critique your team to help them learn and grow; it's just they need to feel that at the end of the day, their well-being and their development are your priority.
