Learning about Building Effective Teams from Sportspeople

Updated: Apr 13, 2023

I would love to see more posts about sport on LinkedIn.

There is so much we can learn about building effective teams from professional sportspeople.

One of my proudest achievements while being involved in The Beehive Foundation was establishing the Spirit of Football round for several years within the South East Juniors Football League (where my son Daniel Spiteri played), thanks to the incredible leadership and support from the then General Manager Shaun Connell.

The Spirit of Football round was not about celebrating skill. It was about celebrating Respect.

Respect for the coaches, Respect for the umpires, Respect for the parents, and Respect for the opposition team.

The coach would kick off the round by sharing an inspiring message about the importance of Respect in the game.

Each player would also wear a green armband as a continuous reminder during the game.

At the end of the game, we would award a medal by the opposition coach to the play that exemplified Respect and fair play.

Finally, we would bring both teams together with umpires and coaches for a collective team photo.

It served as a great reminder that yes, there are always winners and losers in a game, but at the end of the day we are here for our mates and to have fun!

This message serves true in a professional sense. Being respectful to one another helps build a safe, fair and inclusive work culture.

The trust that develops in a team due to Respect shown provides a foundation for effective teams that can rally together and support each other to achieve successful business outcomes.

It is a value we should all hold each other to account for.
