Mistakes happen. It’s how you react to it that is a reflection of your leadership. It is human to make mistakes or an error of judgement. It doesn’t take much – sometimes just a momentary lapse of concentration. Put yourself in the shoes of the person who made the mistake. They are probably already feeling like crap. Anxiety has probably already consumed them. I have made some doozies that still eat at me today, they are hard to forget. Your (over)reaction can make their life even worse. However, a supportive manager and a supportive team can be the difference in how quickly we can recover from the mistake and get back on track. Stay Calm. Fix. Learn. Move On. And if there is a sense of trust that you won’t overreact, then there is a greater chance your team will feel safe to own up when future problems occur. So, how would you react?
