“Ubuntu, how can one of us be happy if all the other ones are sad?”
This story came across my feed on Facebook about an anthropologist who proposed a game to children in an African tribe. He put a basket of fruit near a tree and told the children whoever got there first won the fruit.
When he shouted “Go!” they all held hands, ran together, and they sat together enjoying the treats.
When he quizzed them on why they took this approach, they said:
“Ubuntu, how can one of us be happy if all the other ones are sad?”
Ubuntu is an ancient African word meaning 'humanity to others'. It is often described as reminding us that 'I am what I am because of who we all are'.
Such a simple meaning, however this is the secret to building formidable teams and why a foundation of trust is so important to achieving successful outcomes.
