Eddi Reader

If you haven't worked out already, I'm a huge fan of sharing fascinating tidbits about my favourite musicians and bands. Among them, after the legendary rock band Queen, my top pick is the remarkable Scottish singer-songwriter Eddi Reader.

Eddi Reader rose to fame as the captivating lead vocalist of Fairground Attraction in the late 1980s. Their debut album, "First of a Million Kisses," received widespread praise and even snagged the BRIT Award for Best British Album in 1989. You might recognize her velvety voice from their global hit, "Perfect."

Following her time with Fairground Attraction, Eddi embarked on a fruitful solo career, releasing albums that beautifully blend folk, pop, and Celtic influences. She's also renowned for her enchanting renditions of Robert Burns' songs.

As a dedicated fan, I've been lucky enough to catch Eddi's performances and even meet her on multiple occasions, including here in Australia.

Now, here's a delightful fun fact: Eddi once revealed to me that she went through a phase of disliking her own hit song "Perfect" after it was used in a TV commercial for a UK supermarket chain (by songwriter Mark Nevin) shortly after Fairground Attraction disbanded. However, her fondness for the song was reignited many years later during a Celtic Rangers soccer match when the entire crowd passionately sang "It's got to be… Celtic!" This touching moment filled her late father with pride and brought her back to loving the song. She even surprised a Glasgow karaoke audience once by singing it herself, much to their astonishment!

Well the exciting news is that after over 35 years, the original Fairground Attraction have reformed with a new song and album!
